Christopher Fortin founded Design 410 in 2023 after years at larger landscape architecture firms, and he kept the part of the job he valued most: direct conversation with clients and contractors. A Colorado native with more than a decade in the field, he designs parks, trails, multi-family housing, and offices, and has worked on projects for the National Park Service. He works from Shift Littleton, and his answers below make a case for taking more breaks and listening longer.
What’s a book, movie, or song you think about often, and why?
“Doses and Mimosas” by Cherub. Every time it plays, the vibe instantly gets better.
What’s a piece of advice you’ve received that’s aged well?
Do what makes you happy. Life is short.
What’s a habit that quietly improved your work?
Take lots of breaks and don’t be too hard on yourself. Especially in landscape architecture, a quick walk, a change of scenery, or grabbing lunch can get the creative juices flowing.
What’s a mistake that taught you something useful?
Everyone makes mistakes. You just need to learn from them, grow, and make sure you are happy in life.
What’s a skill more people should practice?
Too many people listen just long enough to relate the conversation back to themselves. Sometimes the best thing you can do is be fully present, hear someone out, and let their story be about them instead of making it about you.
What’s a rule you follow that isn’t written anywhere?
Do what makes you happy!
