Tell us about Canterbury Construction Management Services. What is your mission and what services do you specialize in?
We help Owners, Engineering Consultants, and Contractors plan and execute large public works projects. We provide expert guidance, risk management, estimating, budgeting, scheduling, and construction oversight. Most of our work is in water and wastewater including plants, pipelines, reservoirs, and dams which feels meaningful because people literally drink and shower thanks to these projects. I also teach construction management at Metropolitan State University and Arizona State University because the next generation needs real industry experience, not just textbook knowledge.
Who are the people behind the company? (Introduce yourself and any key team members)
There’s me with 31 years of experience; Pat Zoesch with 34 years managing field projects; Bryan Caudill with 33 years who trained me on my first project; my daughter Erin, a filmmaker helping with budgeting and scheduling; and a group of subconsultants including several cost estimators.
What led you to start or join Canterbury Construction Management Services?
My previous company shut down after the Great Recession, and I had always wanted my own business. I realized Owners and Engineering Consultants needed better early estimates and schedules, so I focused on that. The first eight months with no work while raising kids alone was stressful, but I don’t regret it and cherish the time I had with them.
What are your company’s core values and how do those guide the way you work?
Our biggest value is honesty, saying it like it is. It’s easy to give clients false hope about budgets and schedules, but avoiding tough conversations leads to bigger failures. Being objective and straightforward has earned us many long time clients and cost us a few as well.
What differentiates Canterbury Construction Management from other firms in the construction management space?
Our decades of field experience give us credibility few others can match. My certifications and involvement with national professional organizations keep us aligned with industry Best Management Practices and current with new tools like AI and emerging software.
Why did you choose to locate your business at Shift Workspaces Littleton?
We were here when Shift first opened during COVID so I could focus away from home. We loved it but after COVID changes we couldn’t justify it. Now that we’re growing, we wanted a more professional environment again. Shift was my first and only call. The continuity like Maggie still being here says a lot about the culture and success of the space.
How has being at Shift Workspaces contributed to the growth or success of your company?
We’ve only been back a couple of months, but Shift already gives us the professional presence working from home can never match. The facilities, meeting rooms, and community make a difference when hosting clients or collaborating with our team.
What do you enjoy most about the Shift Workspaces community?
Shift always feels calm, clean, and welcoming. The staff truly care and it shows in the way they treat members and the pride they take in keeping this place running smoothly.
What’s next for Canterbury Construction Management Services?
We want to continue supporting major infrastructure projects, expanding our estimating and scheduling capabilities, and mentoring the next generation entering the construction management profession.
