How Your Business Can Benefit Your Community

Being connected to your local community landscape is essential to continued success when you own a business. The benefits work both ways and staying in touch with other local area businesses and organizations will keep your brand exposed and lead more consumers to your door.

Five Ways Your Company Can Support Your Local Community

There are countless ways to get involved. Below are some examples of how your business can reap big rewards by contributing to the community.

1.      Network with Other Businesses

Forging partnerships or simply meeting to share anecdotes and information with other local business owners keeps you and your business at the forefront of people’s minds. Consider joining the local Chamber of Commerce. Networking opportunities will increase as you get involved in gatherings where professionals from various companies gather to enjoy a meal while swapping cards and discussing current local issues.

2.      Become a Board Member

There are always not-for-profit and community organizations that require board members. Finding and joining one that fits your business profile is another great way to contribute your expertise, expand your connections, and build up your local image.

3.      Sponsorships

A great way to increase your exposure in your community is through sponsorship. Perhaps you would enjoy becoming a sponsor of a local sports team or a particular up-and-coming athlete.

There are usually different sponsorship levels and may include supplying equipment to cover transportation costs or media coverage. Whichever route you choose, the teams are always grateful.

Another type of sponsorship is to become involved with special events or fundraising initiatives, for example, a hospital addition or vital equipment purchase. In this way, you are helping a completely different aspect of your community. You are not limited to any one event. Many companies will have an annual budget set aside for these occasions. Depending on sponsorship packages available, your business will receive exposure through event advertising, tickets, media campaigns, and beyond.

4.      Host Workshops or Special Events

Getting a community together to celebrate a special event or have fun can introduce your business to a completely untapped market. Throw a summer barbecue with entertainment or host a street dance. There are numerous ideas to brainstorm. Try to connect an event with something the community needs and demonstrate how your business can participate.

Workshops can also introduce people to your product and be a valuable resource for sharing information and expertise.

5.      Volunteer Your Time

Find ways to volunteer some of your time to help at a local event, charity, or service organization. Let people see you as the face of your business and be approachable. Not only will you be offering your knowledge, but you’ll also be showing your desire and willingness to support where you work and live.

There are so many ways in which you, as a business owner, can benefit your local community. At the same time, your company will reap the rewards of brand exposure, new and potential customers, and a broader networking base.

Shift Workspaces provides your business with exceptional administrative and technical services at your fingertips to aid you in reaching out to other like-minded and dynamic professionals.

Healthy Eating Boosts Your Productivity!

Feeling sluggish by mid-afternoon? If you find yourself relying on lots of coffee during the day to keep you going, you aren’t alone. In fact, like most people who work on the fly or self-chained to our desks, eating can easily take a back seat. A healthy breakfast and lunch make a big impact on how our bodies and especially brains function and respond.

Think of your body as a high-performance engine. Engines need fuel to function, and when you supply the engine with top-tier fuel, you’ll receive better overall performance. When your body needs fuel, the healthier the food choice, the more reliable energy you’ll feel. Like a car that converts gas into movement, your body converts food to energy that feeds your muscles, organs, and especially your brain.

The Brain Connection

Experts have proven that food directly connects to cognitive function and performance. Poor food choices are known to bring on the classic mid-afternoon crash. The crash can happen earlier for those who rush out the door in the morning without something healthy and sustaining to eat.

While we’ve all heard that taking regular breaks, stretching muscles, and getting enough sleep contribute to better health and sustained energy, healthy eating is a huge part of the picture. Our bodies require a daily dose of proteins, minerals, fiber, healthy carbohydrates, and vitamins to stay in optimum condition, feeding our brains and keeping us more alert, energetic, imaginative, and able to solve more complex problems.

How Food Works

Our body converts almost everything we eat into glucose, which our brain needs to sustain energy. Not replenishing glucose leads to feeling unfocused with a compromised attention span. That’s why it’s harder to concentrate on an empty stomach.

Certain foods release their glucose more quickly, like bread, pasta, and cereal, which leads to the classic burst and slump. High-fat meals like hamburgers may contain protein but cause our digestive systems to work harder, reducing oxygen levels in the brain and leading to fatigue.

Tips For Eating Healthier

Balancing ore meals by mixing fresh, unprocessed foods into your daily diet can help combat the side effects of fast food, such as trading carbohydrates for more protein-rich foods. Here are some tips to keep you eating a healthier diet while working:

1.Keep a stash of natural and unprocessed snacks handy, in your desk or bag, such as nuts, granola, and especially fruits and vegetables. Studies indicate that people who consume more fruits and vegetables are happier, more creative, and engaged, as they help the body to produce dopamine and antioxidants.

2. Decide what you are eating before you get hungry so that you don’t make flash decisions that lead to convenient but unhealthy choices.

3. Cut down on caffeine intake and drink more water to avoid dehydration, headaches, irritability, and insomnia.

4. Take advantage of the kitchen and lounge facilities available at your workplace, such as Shift Workspaces, to store your food and take a break.

The bottom line is, don’t ignore your body when it tells you it’s hungry. Appease hunger with healthier food choices that will feed your brain and lead to better work performance and productivity.

Applying Compassion in Everyday Life

Compassion. What exactly is it? We get confused between compassion and empathy, which is an awareness and attempt to understand others’ emotions. Compassion is an emotional reaction to help someone based on empathy and sympathy and is an integral aspect of any healthy relationship.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, we are encouraged to be more aware of the value of love, but it needn’t be restricted to one person. This Valentine’s Day, use it as an opportunity to be compassionate to everyone around you—not just our nearest and dearest.

We have the power to hurt, yet we have a much greater capacity to heal. Cynicism born of disappointment may conflict with our ability to treat others without judgment. However, displaying kindness and support from the empathy of shared experience takes us to a happier place.

Compassion develops meaningful connections, creates ease in group problem-solving, and improves mental well-being. Through understanding, we recognize and stand up against cruelty towards others, inequality, and racism, and develop a tolerance for those with opposing viewpoints. This is particularly true when it comes to our working lives. Treating colleagues in shared office spaces with respect and compassion is a reflection of how we ourselves wish to be treated, and providing support to those that face similar stresses in their business lives can only help foster a nurturing and supportive culture of professionalism, diversity, and courtesy.

Nelson Mandela once said that as humans, we are bound together by our compassion. We have the choice to demonstrate compassion to others every day. It is a natural and spontaneous reaction for some. For others, it is more difficult.

Expressing Compassion and Empathy Every Day

Compassion is expressed in a look, physical or verbal gesture, or combination of support and action. It is felt and understood through the offer of hope, support, and understanding.

Physical Communication

We live in a digital world. Cell phone calls, texting, emails, and social media posts may provide a quick and temporary expression; however, they are a distant bandage. The power of a warm smile, affectionate hug, squeeze of a hand, or pat on the back can help ease someone’s burden and demonstrate understanding. While it is difficult to convey these physical feelings during the current pandemic, virtual technology may help as a second-best option.

Express Interest and Kindness

Show consideration of someone else’s viewpoint and respect that theirs may differ from yours. Demonstrate interest in another person’s feelings and why they feel as they do. Show kindness through support. Volunteer within an aspect of their life that is difficult or be there just to listen.

Acting out of compassion is not meant to be a false action. We may need to develop skills and attributes that lead to a compassionate response, depending upon our own life experiences.

Awareness of how we feel is the beginning—acting upon these positive emotions to do a service, whether by being kind, being a listener, giving a hug, or going the extra mile to help someone out of their current predicament, is all a mark of the truly compassionate person. It is rewarding for both those who give and receive, and Valentine’s Day is a perfect opportunity to extend our compassion, support to those in need, and give back.

Five Tips for Starting Strong in 2022

The year 2021 ushered in many changes in how we think about running our business and how businesses themselves had to adjust to market fluctuations and instability brought on by the pandemic, climate changes, and shifting politics.

As we steadily move into 2022, it will be essential to recognize new trends and create a strategic plan that incorporates realistic and flexible objectives to surf through potentially unpredictable waves of change.

Change Starts Here: Business Tips for a Strong 2022

By adopting a few of these tips into your year’s schedule, your business will not only cope with any market changes but also have the added fuel to thrive.

1.     Break the Old Mold

Too often in business, we rely on a consistent model that doesn’t work well with the current times and doggedly attempt to make it work. This approach can be financially wasteful and tie up resources better used elsewhere.

If your business has been flailing over the past couple of years, perhaps it is time to break the mold. Many owners, entrepreneurs, and sole proprietors are now choosing to work from home or in shared office spaces, which makes sense if you face a costly lease renewal when a brick-and-mortar space no longer makes sense.

2.     Review and Renew

Take the time to step back and go over the critical decisions made for 2022 before the new year and see if they still seem to work or if you need to adjust based on current times, even though we are only in the early first quarter. Adjust your strategy as needed and break down larger into smaller tasks to make them more achievable, keeping your eyes on the main objective and not getting lost in the small stuff.

3.     Be Aware of the Bigger Picture

With the ongoing challenges facing businesses due to the pandemic, it is wise to stay alert and abreast of disruptions in supply chains and work with distributors and suppliers to leverage product rollouts and delivery with as much consistency as possible. Create a flexible timetable and communicate with other companies in your industry to coordinate and work together. Being supportive of each other during these times is a significant factor in keeping everyone in the business.

4.     Communicate and Educate

If you are planning big changes in running your business, be sure to keep your business partners, clients, and customers in the loop. Management styles, office landscapes, and employee perspectives have shifted over the past couple of years. Providing updates on your adjustments and how they will benefit your network will instill trust and loyalty.

5.     Grow Your Online Presence

While this point may seem obvious, it is still worth mentioning. Make sure that your online presence and SEO are strong. Update your social media and website, refresh outdated information, and, if necessary, hire an outside consultant to work with you on refining your profiles to match your current business model. Review where you are in the present and make the necessary adjustments to ensure your online brand aligns with the times.

Temporary office solutions, coworking spaces, virtual offices, and office service solutions such as those offered by Shift Workspaces are rapidly becoming one of the ways for businesses to remain strong and viable throughout these turbulent times.
